Name: Samantha Traynor
Canon: Mass Effect 3
Original or Alternate Universe: Original
Canon Point: On the way to the final battle on Earth.
Number: Randomize!
Setting: Mass Effect Timeline.
History:
Traynor was born on Horizon, a human colony within the Milky Way galaxy. Her parents were originally from London, and Traynor returned there to study at Oxford, on a full scholarship from the Human-Based Alliance after they saw her scores. During which, Samantha also bartended in order to pay for the luxuries of life. In 2185CE, she was visiting her parents when the Collectors attacked, a galaxy-wide threat targeting human colonies. Soon after the soon, Commander Shepard stopped the Collectors, and returned the living members of the Horizon colony.
In 2186CE, Traynor was accidentally on the Normandy when it took off in the flight from the Reaper attack on Earth. She took the role of the onboard Communication Specialist, and analyzed the data that came into the Normandy from other channels. Very insecure about the new job role on an active military vessel, Traynor was nervous around Commander Shepard, and lacked confidence in her own abilities. However, this was anything but true. During the events of Mass Effect 3, Traynor was consistently professional and efficient at her job, and was able to analyze suspicious data to the extent of finding out Grissom Academy was attacked. Samantha also overhauls the war room, finds the area where Cerberus scientists fled to hide, and tracked Kai Leng back to his hiding place on Horizon.
Between her own endeavors and the events of the main game--defending Palaven's moon, curing the genophage, stopping the war between the Quarians and the Geth, watching the fall of Thessia, finding out what Sanctuary really was--Samantha came into her own as a person, and became comfortable and confident with her role on a military vessel. When on leave during the Citadel DLC, Traynor played an important role in finding a way back onto the Normandy after it was captured--albeit in an amusing way. Afterward, she won a strategy game tournament and then commandeered Shepard's hottub.
With the emphasis on fighting at the end, Samantha was not seen as much, keeping to her background services of communication and data analysis. She was seen last at the very end, at the memorial for those who have fallen.
Personality:
Despite coming into the series in the last game, Traynor has the ability to stand on her own. Polite and respectful, but not above pointing out problems, Traynor is an excellent communications specialist, and despite her thoughts for much of the game, an efficient soldier. She will not sweeten her words when harshness is called for, and would more likely be witty and sarcastic over direct kindness. Nervous and scared at the beginning due to the threat the Reapers faced as well as being on a military vessel, she will over time come to be comfortable in the "shoe box" she describes the Normandy as.
When first noticing suspicious data, Traynor shows little confidence in herself, writing it off somewhat until Shepard or EDI underline its importance. She becomes more free with sharing things as time goes on, even when the last Prothean, Javik, is brought aboard. He offers a translation program made for servant races of the Protheans, which Traynor comments dryly is a "charming cultural clue."
She becomes very attached to the Normandy and its crew despite her small amount of time on it. During the party on the Citadel, Traynor mentions the fact of being the last to join, and when the other crewmates offer stories, she looks forward to having her own. She becomes particularly close with Diana Allers, a reporter on the Normandy, and they casually call and update each other on what is going on. She has the potential to become more casual with Shepard, who she then treats as a friend to tease and trust, rather than a frightening commander. She also has a crush on EDI('s voice), who she originally thought was a simple VI with an excellent voice. After finding out, EDI kept up the friendship, supporting Traynor with her finds and playing chess together. Despite the casual friendship, if Traynor gets drunk at the party on the Citadel, she'll talk about how attractive both EDI and her voice is--and in that vein, if she's in a relationship with Shepard, she'll become excited at learning the commander is 30% synthetic, furthering the assumption that Traynor has a thing for robots.
Samantha is very big on hygiene, likely because of the small, sustainable conditions of the Normandy. She shows extreme excitement for full-sized showers, baths, hot-tubs, and has a Cision Pro Mark 4 toothbrush complete with mini mass effect fields to break up plaque and massage gums which she paid 6000 credits for. Of course, all of this might also be a tad bit of OCD, which would be backed up with her competitive nature in games, as well as her mild hypochondria. The latter, which she's aware of, comes with long, long list of medications she's on, at least one of which being pointed out as a placebo. Gene therapy, a normal treatment for most, was only used for life-threatening ails on Horizon, leaving Samantha with allergies, asthma, etc, you name a normal condition and she likely has it. Despite all this, she's not a complainer for any reason--dealing with her ails the same as the change to the Normandy: in stride.
Traynor is the type the enjoys the finer things of life, like spa treatments, beauty supplies, and expensive toothbrushes, and despite her college being paid for, she took a bartender job in order to pay for the rest. She's extremely comfortable in mixing drinks and remembering orders, as well as showing a finesse in the kitchen. Unlike the majority of the crew, Traynor is not too much of an adventurer, preferring a future with a white picket fence, a dog, and two kids, and looking forward to settling down.
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Traynor has no special abilities whatsoever other than a higher intellect. She's extremely good at analyzing data, chess, and any type of strategy.

Log Sample:
It wasn't that she was scared. Not really. Not after all this time. She was on the SR-2 Normandy, after all, and had Commander Shepard herself to lead them. Shepard had done things no one else could. Lead people to suicide missions and back. Had defeated the Collectors who had taken Horizon. Had defended the Citadel three times now. So this was just another mission. It wasn't anything to worry about.
Except she did. Of course. It was far too late and far too early all at once, that in-between time in which no one in their right mind should be awake. The ensign on watch crossed behind her again, giving a sympathetic smile. Traynor nodded back, preempting his remark. "I'm all right. Really."
All right spending the night before the battle going over the data again, and again, and again. Just in case there was a problem. Or an error. Or something, anything that would--
"You'd be more all right sleeping," the man replied, not unkindly. She shook her head, eyes already focused back on the data flying across the screen in a dance created by her fingertips.
"I'm fine. Completely all right," she murmured again, but the man had already continued. She was fine, of course. It wasn't like she was going down there tomorrow--she would be moderately safe, in the Normandy while the crew went in on the ground. So Traynor had to make sure everything was all right. That everything would go as planned.
Because she didn't want to think of any of them dying. Not if there was something she could have done instead.
Comms Sample:
- Well this is new.... Alright, then. Apparently this isn't the Normandy, so I've been a bit... misplaced. If anyone has any knowledge of the sort, I'd appreciate it.
[ This is possibly not enough information. She glares at her omnitool, wishing it would connect her to the Normandy like it was supposed to. Then all of this.... ]
Er, I'm Specialist Traynor. Currently assigned to the Normandy under Commander Shepard. I would really appreciate--anything really.
[ The polite tone holds for a moment, then drops off in exasperation. ]
--Also, what is up with the bloody tattoos? Who decides to tattoo a person while they're sleeping? That is hardly hygienic, I mean, really.
[ Priorities, Traynor. Priorities.
...At least she has her toothbrush. ] - [ The comm switches on to show a younger woman with dark hair. She smiles briefly before speaking. ]
I was told that there's been some changes in the past few months. If anyone is willing to discuss them, or if there are detailed logs of the shifts in this vessel and there are those willing to share them, I would appreciate it.
[ Because there might be some pattern, some singularity, some central point that it all circles around. And if that is found, maybe then she could--
Go home. Wherever that was. ]
Even if it seems something minor. I've learned myself that everything deserves a second check-through.
[ This, she says with a small smile. Somehow, she never thought she would be considering analyzing data on the Normandy as more simple than anything else. ]
Thanks again. I'll be here. Waiting.
